Week 15: Milestones, strange fruit and sugaring

This week marks a milestone – I have had over 100 new experiences so far this year! I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I am somewhat surprised and pretty pleased with myself for making it this far. It hasn’t always been as easy as I thought. Some days I haven’t felt like doing 1 thing new, especially on days where I have been busy with work or family commitments or I have been feeling a little under the weather, but I am happy to say, I still managed to do something I hadn’t done before. So before I congratulate myself too much, I’ll let you know what I’ve been up to this week.

Day 100: 1 Ingredient ice cream

I celebrated my 100th day of doing something new by making one ingredient ice cream. Ok, so it’s not quite ice cream, more of a creamy frozen dessert. What’s more it’s low in calories and good for you!

Take a few ripe bananas (the riper the better) peel them and pop into the freezer. Once the bananas are completely frozen, pop them into a food processor or blender. Process until the banana resembles ice cream then serve. Delicious!1 ingredient ice cream

Day 101: DIY sugaring

I’m not a huge fan of waxing (it hurts too much!) although, when I waxed my upper lip a few weeks ago, I was pretty pleased with the results. I guess, as it is a small area, it’s easier to cope with the pain. The one time I had my legs waxed (prior to getting married) it hurt so much, I decided never to do that again! So when I found a recipe for a waxing alternative – sugaring – I decided to give it a go.

In my opinion sugaring is no less painful than wax as both pull your hair out at the roots, but there are a couple of reasons why I think sugaring trumps waxing. Firstly, unlike wax, the sugar paste doesn’t stick to your skin, it only sticks to the hair. Secondly, where wax leaves a sticky residue on your skin, any residual sugar paste is easily washed off with warm water. And finally, sugar paste is simple and cheap to make! Here’s the recipe, it you’d like to give it a go.

You will need:Sugar gel ingredients

½ cup sugar
2 tbs sugar
2 tbs water

  1. Mix all ingredients in a small saucepan and put it on a high heat.
  2. Once mixture starts bubbling, reduce heat and stir.
  3. When it turns golden remove from heat.
  4. Test mixture consistency by dropping a bit in a glass of cold water. It should congeal immediately.Sugar gel looks like honey
  5. Pour sugar gel into a glass container and let it cool for approximately 30 minutes before using. Sugar gel should be warm and pliable – do not pour hot sugar gel on your skin IT WILL BURN!!
  6. Keep the sugar gel in a sealed glass container. Reheat in microwave for 2-3 minutes.

Day 102: I tried persimmon

When I eat out at a restaurant I always like to try something new. I have eaten crocodile, rabbit, camel, kangaroo and ostrich to name a few, but when it comes to cooking at home I tend to stick with what I know. Whenever I go to the supermarket there are always a number of exotic fruits in the fresh fruit aisle I have never tried but for some reason, I haven’t bothered to pop them in my trolley. This week I decided to do something about that, so I bought a persimmon. After a quick google search on my phone I knew a ripe persimmon should look like (and how to eat one!) then on day 102 I had persimmon for the first time.

If you haven’t tried the fruit, I would recommend it. It is soft, sweet and delicious!

Day 103: Origami butterflyOrigami butterfly

On Thursday, I made a simple origami butterfly. I didn’t have any origami paper – I just used A4 coloured paper which I cut into a square. This particular butterfly was pretty simple to make. I found a Youtube video and followed it exactly. Mine somehow, didn’t turn out quite as pretty as the ones in the video but, at least it resembles a butterfly (somewhat!)

Day 104: Shut up and drive!

On Friday, I had some time to myself – no work and the boys were occupied elsewhere – so I decided to go for a drive. With no destination in mind, a full tank of petrol and all the time in the world, I got in my car, turned up the radio and just drove.

I got to explore the area I live in, travelling along streets I have regularly driven past, but never down. I found it to be quite a cathartic experience, driving around unhurried and with no destination. Usually, when I get behind the wheel I’m in a mad rush to get from one place to another! But on Good Friday, I was a Sunday driver – and I loved it.

Day 105: Orange lantern

My obsession with making candles out of every day household items still has a hold of me I’m afraid. So when I discovered you could make a candle out of an orange, I just had to try it for myself. To make this one slightly different, I turned my candle into a lantern!

To make a candle from an orange you need vegetable oil (I used canola) and an orange – that’s it!

Simply cut the orange in half and scoop out the flesh, leaving the stem like portion of pith in the middle (not sure what that sticky-uppy thing is called!). This will be your wick.

Half fill your orange with the veggie oil pouring over the wick as you go.

Light the wick – you’ll need to hold the flame to the wick for about 30 seconds until it lights.

To make the lantern, remove the flesh from the other half of the orange and cut a hole into the centre. Place over the candle and there you have an orange lantern that will burn for 2-3 hours depending on how much oil you use.Orange lantern

Day 106: Feijoas

Another fruity experience today. As it’s the Easter weekend and I’ve had family commitments, day 106’s experience was another quick one. I tried a feijoa. This fruit is somewhat tart (I hope it was ripe!) and the flesh was gritty, rather like a guava. Not too unpleasant, but not as nice as the persimmon, I would try it again.

The first 100 and odd days of my challenge are done, but the challenging part remains – finding more than 260 new things to experience and fitting them in to my day-to-day life! Have you had any new experiences so far in 2017? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
